The experience
The yacht departs from Sorrento and sails along the Amalfi Coast toward Capri, where the skipper and hostess guide you to the island's main attractions. You pass the White Grotto first: a cave named for the white stalactites that reflect in the water, with a small Madonna carved into the rocks. The Blue Grotto comes next, the most famous site on the island. Entry to the grotto itself costs 14 euros per person and requires a transfer to a small wooden rowboat to see the interior. Between and after the grottoes, you stop to swim and snorkel in open water.
Faraglioni rocks anchor the eastern side of the island, three limestone stacks rising from Marina Piccola where a rare blue lizard lives. The Green Grotto is another swimming stop where you can jump in and see the crystal water. Throughout the day, the skipper points out Villa Malaparte (the former home of Italian writer Curzio Malaparte, now a museum), Punta Carena lighthouse on the western point, and Tiberio's Jump: the cliff where the Roman emperor allegedly threw enemies. If you choose free time on the island, the boat can anchor near the main harbor, and you can visit the Piazzetta (the central square), Augustus's Gardens, or take the chairlift up Monte Solaro in Anacapri for views across the island and back to Sorrento.
The tour runs eight hours and includes snorkeling gear, towels, snacks, soft drinks, beer, prosecco and limoncello. You can book lunch at one of the island's restaurants for an additional cost. The skipper speaks English and Italian, and groups stay under 12 people. Choose your departure point (Sorrento or Positano), and your boat size when you book. Both options follow the same route and stops.
