The experience

Two or three hours on the water means you move at a pace that lets you actually see what you came for. The Gozzo, a traditional wooden fishing boat, carries no more than six people, so there's room to move around the bow, ask the skipper questions, and linger at a spot if something catches your eye. The boat leaves from Capri's marina and heads along the coastline, stopping where the water is clear enough to jump in.

The Green Grotto comes first, and the seaweed that fills it with an emerald glow is visible from the surface. You'll see the Natural Arch on the east coast (a collapsed grotto dating back to the Paleolithic age), and the Faraglioni, three massive rock spurs that rise straight out of the sea off the southern shore. The Blue Grotto passes by without a stop. The operator notes that the 2 or 3 hour window doesn't allow time for the long queue at the entrance, so you see it from the boat instead. Snorkeling gear is on board if you want to go under, and the skipper will cut the engine in calm spots so you can swim.

Soft drinks are included, and you're welcome to bring a picnic or order drinks to be served while you're anchored. Life jackets are available for anyone who wants one. If you're arriving from Positano, book a noon slot or later: ferries from there often cancel or run late in the morning, and a delayed arrival means the tour can't run.
