The Experience

I didn’t expect the water around Capri to look quite that green — almost glowing, like someone dropped emerald ink into the sea. We hopped onto this old-school Gozzo boat at Marina Grande, just me, my partner, and Salvatore (our skipper, who greeted us with a grin and a “Pronti?”). The engine was quieter than I thought it’d be. You could actually hear the gulls and the little slap of waves against the wood as we left the crowds behind. There was sun but also this salty breeze that kept everything from getting sticky.

First stop was the Green Grotto. Salvatore slowed down and pointed out how the sunlight hit the water — he said it’s all because of some special seaweed under there. He let us jump in for a swim (cold at first, then perfect), and I swear I could taste salt for hours after. My partner tried to say “Grotta Verde” in Italian; Salvatore laughed and corrected him gently. It felt good not to rush anywhere. We drifted past those famous Faraglioni rocks — I always thought they’d be bigger, but up close they’re just… odd and beautiful at once. There were a couple of other boats but mostly quiet, except for an older couple waving from another Gozzo.

We passed by the Blue Grotto too, but Salvatore warned us about crazy long lines so we didn’t stop (honestly fine by me — floating outside was enough). He told us stories about old movie stars sneaking here in the ‘60s. There was time for one more swim before heading back; I lay on my back in the water looking up at Capri’s cliffs and tried to memorize how it all smelled — sunblock, sea spray, maybe lemons from somewhere inland? Still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck on the subway.

What’s included

Your cruise includes use of life jackets for everyone onboard, complimentary soft drinks to sip as you drift along Capri’s coast, snorkeling equipment if you want to dive in near grottoes or coves, plus a friendly local sailor guiding your route—so you can just relax and enjoy every moment out at sea before returning to port.
