The experience

The day starts before dawn when your guide picks you up from your hotel. The 2-hour climb to Mount Batur's summit is steep and challenging, but you arrive between 5:30 and 6am in time to watch the sunrise from 1,717 meters above the island. Breakfast and hot coffee wait at the top, giving you time to rest and take in the views across Bali before heading back down.

After descending Mount Batur, you move straight into the second half of the day: a 2.5-hour white-water rafting run down the Ayung River. The 10-mile journey takes you through tropical rainforest with cascading waterfalls dropping into the canyon around you. You'll paddle through a series of rapids as the river cuts deeper into the landscape, and the guide handles the technical sections while you do the work in the raft.

The route passes Lake Batur, the Kintamani highlands, and Tirta Empul Temple, though these are views from the road rather than stops. You'll also pass a luwak civet coffee plantation on the drive. Transport between each section is by air-conditioned minivan, and the full day runs about 15 hours from pickup to drop-off.

Top questions

How difficult is the Mount Batur climb?

The 2-hour hike to the 1,717-meter summit is steep and challenging, so moderate physical fitness is required. The climb happens in darkness before dawn, which adds difficulty, but you reach the top in time to rest and eat breakfast before the sunrise.

What's included in the price?

The package includes a local English-speaking guide, hotel pickup and drop-off, transport by air-conditioned minivan, breakfast at the summit, and the white-water rafting experience on the Ayung River. Gratuities, alcoholic drinks and DVDs are not included but available to purchase.

How long is the rafting section?

You spend approximately 2.5 hours on the water, paddling 10 miles (16 kilometers) down the Ayung River. The route passes through tropical rainforest with waterfalls and a series of rapids, though the guide leads you through the technical sections.

What should I bring?

Wear hiking or sport shoes for the volcano climb. Bring a warm jacket and long pants for the pre-dawn ascent, plus sunblock, a camera and toilet paper. The rafting section will get you wet, so pack a change of clothes or a dry bag for your valuables.

Is there a minimum age?

The minimum age is 15 years old. The trek is not recommended for pregnant travelers or anyone with poor cardiovascular health, since the pre-dawn climb to 1,717 meters is physically demanding.
