The Experience
The hike starts at 3:30 pm from Ubud, and by the time you reach the parking area at Mount Batur's base, the light is already turning gold. Two hours of walking uphill — steady, not brutal — and you're standing at the summit of Mount Batur at 1,717 meters above sea level. The air gets thinner and cooler as you climb, and your guide points out the volcanic landscape spreading below: the Kintamani area opens up in layers of terraced fields and distant ridges. You've got time to settle in, catch your breath, and watch the sun drop behind the western ridge while the sky turns orange and then purple.
Dinner happens at the summit in your private camping spot — soup, a main course, something warm, hot drinks. It's simple food cooked at altitude, and it tastes better than it has any right to. After dark you're in your tent, and the stars are the kind you don't see from the city. The next morning starts at 5 am when your guide wakes you. By 6 am you're eating breakfast while the sun comes up in front of you, the same view from a different angle, the crater rim catching the first light. If you're steady on your legs, your guide will suggest walking down via the crater itself — a longer route that takes you through the volcanic landscape instead of retracing the main path. Either way, you're back at the car park by 9 am.
Before the drive back to Ubud, there's two hours at Batur Natural Hot Spring — the geothermal pools are warm and mineral-rich, and it's the kind of soak that makes the muscle soreness disappear. Towels and entry are included. You're dropped back at your hotel by 11:30 am, which means you've done a full Mount Batur camping experience and still have most of the afternoon left.
What’s included
Your two days include private transportation from your Ubud hotel and back, all meals (dinner and breakfast cooked at the summit, plus tea and coffee), bottled water, entry to Batur Natural Hot Spring with a towel, hiking equipment (head lamp and walking pole), and all fees and taxes. You'll need to bring your own long pants, jacket, change of clothes, and hiking shoes.
