The guide picks you up from your hotel before dawn—early enough that you can rest in the car on the drive to Mount Batur. Once there, an experienced hiking guide leads you up the mountain in darkness, timing the climb so you reach the summit just as the sky begins to lighten. Breakfast waits at the top, cooked using volcanic steam from the mountain itself, and you eat while watching the sun rise and the view open across all of Bali in a full 360 degrees.

After sunrise you trek back down the mountain and head to a natural hot spring where the water stays warm year-round. You can soak and swim in the spring, which sits on the shore of Lake Batur and gives you time to recover from the hike. The day also passes through a traditional coffee plantation where you can watch the coffee-making process and taste different types; if you want to stop at the Ubud Art Market or see the Tegalalang Rice Terrace on the drive, you can ask your guide, though those stops may carry an extra cost.
