The day starts before dawn: pickup at your hotel between 1 and 3 a.m., then a private air-conditioned car takes you to Toya Bungkah, the trekking start point. Your guide meets you there and you begin climbing Mount Batur in darkness, using a headlight provided. The hike is about 9 kilometers up and down. Most people reach the summit viewpoint by 5:30 or 6 a.m., just as the sun rises over the crater. The peak sits at 1,717 meters above sea level. If you have the fitness and want to see more, your guide can take you around the crater rim instead of the direct descent. You decide based on how you feel.
Breakfast happens at the top: banana sandwiches, boiled eggs, fruit, and hot drinks (coffee, hot chocolate, or tea) served while you're still on the mountain. After eating and resting, you walk back down. The descent takes about an hour to 90 minutes depending on which route you took. By 8:30 or 9 a.m. you're back at the car park, and the driver takes you straight to Batur Natural Hot Spring. This is geothermal water (proof the volcano is still active), and it's the payoff after the climb. You soak and refresh there for roughly two hours, then the driver takes you back to your hotel by 11 a.m.
