The experience
The day starts at your hotel with pickup by a private car and driver who speaks English. The first stop is Lempuyang Temple, also called Pura Lempuyang Luhur, one of Bali's oldest and most respected temples, sitting on top of Bisbis Hill. The four-hour drive gets you there in the morning. Once you arrive, you'll spend around two hours at the temple. The main draw is the Gate of Heaven, a temple gateway that frames Mount Agung in the background. The reason most visitors come is to photograph it. Dress codes apply: if you wear shorts or a short skirt, you'll be given a cloth to wrap around your legs. The view from the gate does look like you're standing in the sky.
After the temple, the driver takes you 30 minutes down to Tirta Gangga Water Palace, where you'll spend about half an hour. This is a large park built by the King of Karangasem as a royal bathing place and recreation palace. The water comes from natural springs. You can wade in the same pools the royal family once used, and the park is designed with ponds and landscaping throughout. Lunch happens here at a restaurant in the natural area of the park. From Tirta Gangga, it's another hour's drive to Taman Ujung Water Palace, also known as the Taman Ujung floating palace. Built at the start of the 20th century as the palace of the King of Karangasem, it's one of the most visited sites in eastern Bali. You'll have about an hour to walk around. The return drive to your hotel takes three hours.
