The Experience

The first thing that hit me in Varanasi wasn’t the heat or the crowds—it was that sound at dusk by the river. I thought I’d seen busy places before, but this was something else—priests in saffron robes swinging lamps, bells clanging so loud my chest buzzed, incense thick enough to taste. The next morning started before sunrise—still dark when we shuffled down to the ghats for our boat ride on the Ganges. The air felt cool and sticky at once.
