The experience
You're picked up at your hotel before dawn and walked down to Dashashwamedh Ghat, where the boat ride begins as the sun rises over the Ganges. An hour-long trip south takes you past Harishchandra Ghat and Manikarnika Ghat, where you watch pilgrims bathing, performing rituals, practicing yoga and meditation, and worshiping the sun. Your guide explains the significance of each ritual and the people you see along the banks. The boat returns before breakfast.
Back at your hotel, you freshen up and eat before heading into the old city on foot. The walk through narrow alleyways leads to Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the most important Shiva temples in India, topped with more than 850 kilograms of real gold. Your guide shares the temple's heritage and significance, and can direct you to a street food vendor for masala chai and traditional local breakfast. You return to your hotel to rest and recharge before the afternoon.
After breakfast, you drive about 10 km to Sarnath, where Buddha preached his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. You walk through the garden to see the ruins of monasteries and temples, visit the main temple, and explore the excavated ruins and Archaeological Museum (closed on Fridays). The Dhamek Stupa, a 43.6-meter-high Buddhist monument with carved floral designs and geometric patterns, marks the exact spot of that first sermon. Nearby stands the Ashoka Pillar, a 3rd century BCE sandstone column topped with the Lion Capital, four lions standing back-to-back, which now appears on India's official emblem. Lunch follows at a local restaurant.
On the return to Varanasi, you drive through the weavers district to learn about hand-weaving of Banarasi silk brocades, then through the lush green campus of Banaras Hindu University, where you may visit the new Vishwanath temple inside. The Durga Temple, painted in red and built in the 18th century, comes next: a temple particularly significant for worship of Goddess Durga. As evening falls, you walk down to Dashashwamedh Ghat to watch the Ganga Aarti ceremony. Young priests face the river, revolving lamps before idols in a clockwise motion while chanting hymns, accompanied by drums, conch-shell blowing, and temple bells. After the ceremony, you're dropped back at your hotel.
