The Experience

We met our guide, Ankit, right in the hotel lobby—he had that easy way of talking that makes you feel like you already know him. He handed me a marigold garland (I still have a petal pressed in my notebook) and led us straight into the old city. The alleys were so narrow I almost brushed shoulders with a cow painted in bright red powder. Spice smells everywhere—cardamom one second, frying oil the next. At the paan market, a vendor grinned at my awkward attempt to say “Banarasi paan”—Ankit laughed too and said I sounded more like someone ordering pizza than betel leaf.

The first evening on the Ganges was quieter than I expected. Our boatman barely spoke but hummed something under his breath as we drifted past Manikarnika Ghat—smoke rising from funeral pyres, families gathered close. It felt strange to witness it all from the water: life and death right there together. Then suddenly we reached Dasaswamedh Ghat just as the lamps came out for Ganga Aarti—bells ringing, conch shells echoing across the river, priests moving in rhythm. My shirt still smelled faintly of river after.

Next morning was early—like really early—but worth it. The sunrise over the Ganges is something I didn’t know I needed to see until I did. Pilgrims were already bathing, some quietly meditating on stone steps while others chatted with chai sellers or offered flowers to the water. Our day trip through Varanasi kept rolling: winding through gold-topped temples (the Kashi Vishwanath Temple really does glitter), ducking into breakfast spots for kachori sabzi (messy but so good), and later driving out to Sarnath where Buddha gave his first sermon. The Dhamek Stupa is massive up close—cool stone under your hand if you reach out—and monks circled it slowly while chanting.

I lost track of time at the archaeological museum; it’s small but packed with carved lions and ancient pillars—the Ashoka Pillar especially feels important somehow when you see it in person. By evening we were back in Varanasi for street food: jalebi syrup sticky on my fingers, lassi thick enough to need a spoon. Ankit joked that after this food tour dinner would be impossible—and he was right.
