The experience

The tour opens with an evening boat ride down the Ganges at sunset, starting from Dashashwamedh Ghat and passing Manikarnika Ghat (where cremations take place on the riverbank) before stopping to watch the Ganga Aarti ceremony. The next morning, you walk the Bengali Tola neighborhood through narrow alleys of the old city, visiting a temple, a private residence and an ashram to see how people live in one of the world's oldest inhabited cities. That afternoon, a bazaar walk takes you through hidden markets selling paan (betel leaf), spices, flowers and toys. Lunch is at a local restaurant. You'll also walk the weavers district to learn about hand-weaving of Banarasi silk brocades and visit private homes of weavers still practicing the craft.

Day two continues with a drive through the Banaras Hindu University campus and its newer Vishwanath temple, then a visit to the red-painted Durga Temple, built in the 18th century and considered one of Varanasi's most powerful temples. The afternoon is a street food tour through popular local eateries. Your guide will drop you at your hotel afterward, and dinner is not included after this tour. On the final day, you start before dawn with a boat ride south from Dashashwamedh Ghat along the Ganges: an hour-long trip to Harishchandra and Manikarnika Ghats and back. You'll see pilgrims bathing, performing rituals, practicing yoga and meditation. After returning to your hotel to rest and have breakfast, you drive to Sarnath, where Buddha preached his first sermon after enlightenment. There you walk the garden ruins of different monasteries and temples, visit the main temple and the archaeological museum (closed Fridays), which houses the Lion Capital, the emblem of India, and other excavated artifacts from the site.

The Dhamek Stupa at Sarnath is a 43.6-meter cylindrical Buddhist monument at the Deer Park, marked with carved floral designs and geometric patterns in the Gupta style. Nearby stands the Ashoka Pillar, a 3rd-century sandstone column topped with four lions standing back-to-back, representing strength and unity. Your guide will drop you back to your hotel after the museum visit.
