The Experience

I didn’t expect the river to be so quiet at dawn. We were picked up before sunrise—my brain still half asleep—and suddenly there I was, floating on the Ganges with our guide, Amit. The air smelled faintly of wood smoke and wet stone. People were already bathing at the ghats, their voices soft and echoing across the water.
