The Experience
I didn’t expect the river to be so quiet at dawn. We were picked up before sunrise—my brain still half asleep—and suddenly there I was, floating on the Ganges with our guide, Amit. The air smelled faintly of wood smoke and wet stone. People were already bathing at the ghats, their voices soft and echoing across the water. Amit pointed out which ghat was which—I kept mixing them up—and explained why this stretch of river means so much here. It felt like time was stretching and shrinking all at once.
We stepped off at Manikarnika Ghat just as the sun really started to show. I’ll admit, I hesitated; it’s not easy to witness cremation ceremonies up close. But Amit was patient—he answered every question without making it awkward or sensational. The rituals were both matter-of-fact and deeply moving. I caught myself holding my breath more than once. Afterward we went back for breakfast (I needed coffee), and I couldn’t quite shake what I’d seen—still can’t, honestly.
Sarnath came after lunch—a short drive but a whole different energy. There’s something calming about those old stupas and gardens; maybe it’s all that space after the city’s chaos. We wandered past monks in orange robes and Amit told us about Buddha’s first sermon here (I probably butchered the pronunciation when I tried to repeat “Dhamek Stupa”—Amit laughed). Lunch was simple but good—dal, rice, something spicy I never got the name of.
The last stop was watching the evening aarti from a private balcony above Dashashwamedh Ghat—not packed into a boat with everyone else (which honestly looked hectic). The lamps and chanting drifted up to us; bells ringing, priests moving in perfect rhythm. For a moment it felt like everything below was part of some huge living heartbeat. We left quietly after that—I just wanted to hold onto that feeling for a bit longer.
