The Experience

The first thing I remember is how quiet Varanasi felt at 5:30am—just the sound of oars dipping into the river and a few voices on the ghats. Our guide, Pradeep, handed me some chai in a paper cup that was still too hot to hold. We drifted along the Ganges as the sky turned pink behind Dashashwamedh Ghat. People were already bathing in the water, lighting little lamps. I tried not to stare but honestly, it’s hard not to when you’re seeing morning rituals that have been happening here forever. Pradeep told us about why this spot is so important for Hindus—he spoke softly, like he didn’t want to disturb anything.

After we got off the boat (I nearly slipped on those stone steps), we wandered through these narrow lanes where scooters and cows seem to have right of way over everyone else. He pointed out Kashi Vishwanath temple from a distance—the crowds were thick even early. Breakfast was just some kachori and jalebi from a street stall; I’m still not sure what was in that spicy potato filling but it woke me up faster than coffee ever could. The Banaras Hindu University campus felt huge and almost peaceful compared to the city outside—Bharat Kala Bhavan museum had these tiny sculptures and old paintings I’d never have found on my own.

I liked Mother India Temple more than I expected—the marble map inside is weirdly hypnotic if you stand there long enough. Lunch was somewhere local (not included), and then we drove out to Sarnath. The Dhamekh Stupa rises out of this green park where people just sit quietly or feed monkeys. Pradeep explained how Buddha gave his first sermon here—I didn’t know much about Buddhism before, but something about that place made me want to read more later. There’s an archaeological museum nearby too (closed Fridays), full of stone lions and ancient bits and pieces.

By late afternoon we were back at the river for another boat ride—this time past the cremation ghats. It’s strange how life and death are so open here; nobody looks away or whispers. The sun was low when we reached Dashashwamedh Ghat again for the evening Ganga Aarti ceremony. Drums started up, priests waved fire in big circles, flower petals floated everywhere—it all felt bigger than me somehow. I kept thinking about how many evenings like this must have happened before ours. Anyway, by 8pm we were back at our hotel, tired but sort of awake inside in a new way.
