The experience
The walk starts at a viewpoint overlooking the ghats, then moves into the narrow lanes where the city's oldest temples stand. You'll see Vishalakshi Temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas (sacred shrines of the divine feminine), and pass the Kashi Vishwanath Temple from the outside, learning its history and spiritual importance without entering. The Nepali Temple, built in the 19th century by the King of Nepal, shows the blend of Nepali and Indian wooden architecture that shaped the city. An underground temple connected to Manikarnika Ghat marks the link between life and death in Hindu belief.
Manikarnika Ghat itself, the largest cremation ground in Varanasi, sits on the Ganges banks and is considered the place where souls achieve liberation (moksha) when cremated here. The guide walks you through the ghat and explains what you're seeing, the rituals and the spiritual meaning. You'll also pass the Alamgir Mosque and old markets that fill the surrounding streets, then stop at a famous lassi shop, one of the best places in Varanasi to drink the yogurt drink. Throughout, the guide talks about the culture, religion, traditions and Hindu gods and goddesses that shape the city.
