The Experience

The rowboat leaves at sunrise and moves slowly down the Ganges, which is the holiest river in India and the lifeline of northern India. You pass the Varanasi Ghats—the riverfront steps where pilgrims bathe, wash clothes and perform rituals along the banks. The guide points out what is happening on the water and the steps: the way of life that has centered on these ghats for centuries. The boat is private, so the pace and the stops are yours to shape.

Dashashwamedh Ghat, the main ghat, appears most spectacular in the early light. The guide explains the two Hindu legends tied to it—one about Lord Brahma creating it to welcome Lord Shiva, another about a sacrifice of ten horses. From the water you also see Kedar Ghat and pass Manikarnika Ghat, the main burning ghat and the most auspicious place for a Hindu to be cremated. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple, also called the Golden Temple, stands on the western bank; the guide describes its role as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the holiest Shiva temples. The three hours on the water hold all of this without rushing.
