The Experience

Dashashwamedh Ghat is where the boat ride starts, and you'll be on the water before sunrise. The guide meets you at Godowlia, the busy crossing where pilgrims arrive, and you'll watch their activities for a moment before heading to the river. The boat is hand-rowed and narrow enough to move slowly through the water, which is the whole point—you're not rushing past the ghats, you're drifting through them as the light changes.

The boat goes upstream first, passing Shitala Ghat (where a temple to the goddess of smallpox stands), Ahilyabai Ghat, and Munshi Ghat before reaching Harishchandra, a cremation ground in the southern part of the city. The guide explains the history and spiritual significance of each one—the stories behind the names, the rituals that happen on the steps, why pilgrims come to bathe in the Ganges. Then the boat turns and heads back downstream, passing Man Mandir Ghat with its palace built in 1585, Meer Ghat with its access to the Vishalakshi temple, and Nepali Ghat, which has a shrine to the goddess Ganga and a replica of the Pashupati Nath Temple. The whole thing moves at the pace of the river.

Manikarnika Ghat is the cremation ground, and you'll see the rituals from the boat—photography of the cremation area itself is not allowed, but you watch from the water. After that, the boat returns to Dashashwamedh Ghat, where you get off and have free time to walk around and absorb the religious activities happening on the steps. The whole experience is two to three hours, and the guide is with you the entire time.
