The experience

You arrive at Varanasi airport or railway station and a driver meets you for the transfer to your hotel. The first day is built around timing: you check in, freshen up, then head to Sarnath, the place where Buddha preached his first sermon to five disciples 2,500 years ago. The site holds monasteries, a museum with the Lion Capital of Ashoka, and a deer park. By evening you're at the Ganges for the Ganga Aarti: a ceremony that starts at 5 p.m. at Dashashwamedh Ghat, where young priests in saffron and white robes wave oil lamps in synchronized motion while chanting, and thousands of small lamps float downriver like stars on water. After that, your guide takes you through the narrow lanes of Kachori Gali for a street food walk, stopping at the famous Blue Lassi shop and tasting chat, lassi, and paan malaiyo.

Day two begins before dawn. You witness the morning Aarti at Assi Ghat as the sun rises, then board a hand-rowing boat for a tour of all the major ghats. From the water you see people bathing in the river to wash away sin, devotees offering water to the sun god, and the daily life of Varanasi unfolding along the banks. The boat drops you at Manikarnika Ghat, the only cremation ghat in the world, where your guide explains the rituals and the heritage of the place during a 30-minute walk. You then walk the heritage route from Dashashwamedh Ghat to Manikarnika, passing sadhus and ancient buildings, before reaching Kashi Vishwanath Temple: reconstructed in 1780 and one of the most sacred Hindu temples. Bring a passport copy. Police check it at the entrance. After breakfast back at the hotel, a city tour takes you to Bharat Mata Temple, Sankat Mochan, Manas Mandir, and the Banaras Hindu University. In the afternoon, you visit the Muslim weaving quarter to watch the process of making Banarasi handmade sarees: over 10,000 looms run there, and no one will pressure you to buy.

On the final morning, you have leisure time to explore on your own before checkout. A vehicle is provided for your transfer to the airport. The 4-star or 5-star hotel includes a private room with breakfast each day, and your guide speaks English throughout the tour. Mineral water is provided daily.
