The Experience

The day starts before dawn. A 5 am pickup brings you to the Ganges for a private hand-rowing boat ride as the sun rises, moving from Dashashwamedh Ghat downriver past Harishchandra Ghat toward Manikarnika—the largest cremation ground in the world, where a minimum of 200 bodies are cremated daily. From the water, you watch pilgrims bathing, performing rituals, offering prayers, and hear the chants, bells and incense that fill the early morning. The light shifts from darkness to orange and pink across the ghats and the river.

After breakfast around 8:45 or 9 am, the tour moves through the winding lanes and ancient temples of the old city—including the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, rebuilt in the 18th century and covered in 820 kg of gold, and the Durga Temple, a red and golden structure also called the monkey temple. Then you travel 13 km to Sarnath, where Buddha gave his first sermon after enlightenment. There you see the Dhamek Stupa, the Mulagandhakuti Vihara temple with Buddha frescoes, the Sarnath Archaeological Museum holding the Lion Capital of Ashoka, and the Ashoka Pillar itself—the lion-topped symbol on Indian currency.

By evening, you return to Dashashwamedh Ghat with reserved seating on a private rooftop balcony for the Ganga Aarti ceremony, performed by seven priests after sunset. Seven priests chant Vedic mantras, play conch shells and drums, and wave large fire lamps in synchronized motion while offering prayers to the river. Incense, sandalwood powder, oil lamps, camphor and peacock feathers fill the air. The ceremony symbolizes purification of the soul and is believed to wash away sins. The crowd is large and the ritual is colorful; your rooftop spot keeps you above the press without losing the view. After the ceremony, the guide returns you to your hotel.
