The Experience

The day starts before dawn. A 5 am pickup brings you to the Ganges for a private hand-rowing boat ride as the sun rises, moving from Dashashwamedh Ghat downriver past Harishchandra Ghat toward Manikarnika—the largest cremation ground in the world, where a minimum of 200 bodies are cremated daily. From the water, you watch pilgrims bathing, performing rituals, offering prayers, and hear the chants, bells and incense that fill the early morning. The light shifts from darkness to orange and pink across the ghats and the river.

After breakfast around 8:45 or 9 am, the tour moves through the winding lanes and ancient temples of the old city—including the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, rebuilt in the 18th century and covered in 820 kg of gold, and the Durga Temple, a red and golden structure also called the monkey temple. Then you travel 13 km to Sarnath, where Buddha gave his first sermon after enlightenment. There you see the Dhamek Stupa, the Mulagandhakuti Vihara temple with Buddha frescoes, the Sarnath Archaeological Museum holding the Lion Capital of Ashoka, and the Ashoka Pillar itself—the lion-topped symbol on Indian currency.

By evening, you return to Dashashwamedh Ghat with reserved seating on a private rooftop balcony for the Ganga Aarti ceremony, performed by seven priests after sunset. Seven priests chant Vedic mantras, play conch shells and drums, and wave large fire lamps in synchronized motion while offering prayers to the river. Incense, sandalwood powder, oil lamps, camphor and peacock feathers fill the air. The ceremony symbolizes purification of the soul and is believed to wash away sins. The crowd is large and the ritual is colorful; your rooftop spot keeps you above the press without losing the view. After the ceremony, the guide returns you to your hotel.

Top questions

What exactly happens during the sunrise boat ride on the Ganges?

The private hand-rowing boat departs as the sun is about to rise, moving from Dashashwamedh Ghat downriver past Harishchandra Ghat to Manikarnika Ghat. From the water you watch pilgrims bathing, performing morning rituals, offering prayers, and hear the chants, bells and incense. The early morning light casts orange and pink hues across the ghats and river as the sky transitions from darkness to light.

What is Manikarnika Ghat and why is it significant?

Manikarnika Ghat is the world's largest cremation ground, where a minimum of 200 bodies are cremated daily around the clock. According to Hindu belief, cremation there grants moksha—liberation from the cycle of rebirth. Bodies come from across India for this reason, and each receives its own pyre. The ghat is associated with the deities Shiva and Parvati and has existed for thousands of years.

How long is the full day, and what time does it end?

The tour runs 12 to 14 hours total, starting with a 5 am hotel pickup and ending after the evening Aarti ceremony at Dashashwamedh Ghat, which begins around 6:30 to 7 pm depending on sunset. You return to your hotel after the ceremony concludes.

What is the Ganga Aarti ceremony like?

The Ganga Aarti is an evening fire-ritual performed by seven priests at Dashashwamedh Ghat, starting around 6:30 to 7 pm. Priests chant Vedic mantras, play conch shells, bells and drums, and wave large fire lamps in synchronized motion. Incense, sandalwood powder, oil lamps, camphor and peacock feathers are used. The ceremony symbolizes purification and is believed to wash away sins. Your reserved rooftop balcony seat keeps you above the crowd while maintaining a full view of the ritual.

Is Sarnath included, and what will I see there?

Yes, Sarnath is included as a stop on the day tour, 13 km from Varanasi. It is the sacred site where Buddha gave his first sermon after enlightenment. You visit the Dhamek Stupa (the main ancient stupa), the Mulagandhakuti Vihara temple with Buddha frescoes, the Sarnath Archaeological Museum with ancient relics, the Ashoka Pillar (the lion-topped symbol on Indian currency), and Jain and Tibetan temples.

What is included in the price, and what do I need to bring?

The tour includes private air-conditioned car transport for the entire 12 to 14 hours, a government-approved professional English-speaking guide, all entry fees and taxes, a private hand-rowing boat for the sunrise ride, and reserved rooftop seating for the evening Aarti ceremony. Gratuities and tips are not included. Wear comfortable walking shoes for the temple lanes and winding streets, and bring sun protection for the early morning boat ride.
