The day starts before dawn with a boat ride on the Ganges at sunrise. You move through the southern ghats watching the city wake: pilgrims bathing, priests performing rituals, daily life unfolding along the water. The boat tour flows into a walking tour of the oldest neighborhoods, where narrow lanes open onto temples and the Kashi Vishwanath shrine. A local guide leads you through the cultural layers: Hindu, Buddhist and Jain sites layered across centuries in the same streets.

In the afternoon, you travel northeast to Sarnath, about 13 kilometers outside the city. This is where Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon after enlightenment, and where the Buddhist Sangha, the monastic community, was founded. You return to Varanasi for the evening Ganga Aarti, a ceremony of chanting, mantras, lights and sacred music performed on the riverbank to honor the Ganges.
