The Experience

The day starts at your hotel. A driver picks you up and takes you straight to Amber Fort, the red sandstone palace built in 1592 by Raja Man Singh when it was still the capital of Rajasthan. The fort sits above the city with the Maotha Lake below it, and your guide walks you through the courtyards and chambers, explaining how the Kachhwaha Rajputs ruled from here before Jaipur was founded. From there you move to Nahargarh Fort, perched on the Aravallis ridge — it was built in 1734 as a retreat for the royal family and now it frames views of the entire Pink City below.

The middle of the day takes you to the landmarks most visitors come for. Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Winds, is the five-story pink sandstone structure with 953 small windows that was built in 1799 to let royal women watch street life without being seen. Jantar Mantar, the astronomical instrument collection completed in 1734, holds the world's largest stone sundial and is a UNESCO World Heritage site — your guide explains what each instrument measured and why Sawai Jai Singh II built them. You also visit Jal Mahal, the water palace floating on the lake, and see the City Palace, Albert Hall Museum and Birla Mandir Temple depending on the day's flow.
