The Experience

Eight to ten hours takes you through Varanasi's spiritual core without the logistics of getting between sites yourself. The day starts with hotel pickup and moves straight to Dashashwamedh Ghat, the main riverfront platform where two Hindu legends converge—one says Lord Brahma created it to welcome Lord Shiva, the other that he performed a horse sacrifice here. From there you walk to Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Shiva, its tower plated with 800 kg of gold; the temple itself admits only Hindus, but you see the tower and the surrounding corridor. The guide then leads you through Vishwanath Gali, the narrow market street packed with local snacks, sweets and street shopping—brass deity idols, traditional apparel, household items and home décor.

The route then moves through Varanasi's layered history: the 17th-century Alamgir Mosque, built by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in Indo-Islamic style with high domes and minarets; Banaras Hindu University's sprawling 5.3-square-kilometer campus; and the New Vishwanath Temple within it, which holds the world's tallest temple tower at around 250 feet. You visit the Bharat Kala Bhavan Museum, an archaeological collection spanning the 1st to 15th centuries with sculptures, paintings, jewellery and textiles, and the Bharat Mata Temple, built in 1936 with a marble relief map of undivided India carved inside. Spiritual stops include Tulsi Manas Temple with its walls inscribed with verses from the Ramcharitmanas, Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple by the River Assi (built in the 1900s by freedom fighter Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya), Durga Temple on the Ganga's bank with its 18th-century idol of Goddess Durga, and the Nepali Temple, one of the oldest in the city, made of stone, terracotta and wood carvings.

After the Varanasi leg, the tour moves to Sarnath, where Buddha preached his first sermon after enlightenment. The Dhamekh Stupa and Emperor Ashoka's pillar from 273–232 BC stand as monuments to the site's historical weight. The day concludes at Ramnagar Fort on the eastern bank of the Ganga, where an eccentric museum houses a royal collection of vintage cars, swords, palanquins, ivory works, old weaponry and an unusual astrological clock. Hotel drop-off ends the tour.
