The Experience

I nearly missed my alarm — 2:45 am is not my proudest hour — but our driver was already waiting outside our Delhi hotel, somehow more awake than me. The highway to Agra was mostly empty except for trucks and a few chai stalls flickering in the dark. I kept dozing off until we hit the city; then it was all sudden color and movement, even before dawn. Our guide, Sameer, met us with this huge grin and a thermos of sweet tea (lifesaver), and then we were off to the Taj Mahal before sunrise. The air felt cool and almost damp — I could smell wet stone and something floral I couldn’t place.

Walking through the gates just as the sky started to lighten, I actually got goosebumps (and not just from lack of sleep). The Taj Mahal really does look different at sunrise — softer, like someone’s turned down the world’s brightness. There weren’t many people yet. Sameer pointed out little details in the marble that catch pink light you’d never notice later in the day. He told us stories about Shah Jahan and Mumtaz that made it feel less like a postcard and more like something real people built out of love or grief or both. I tried taking photos but honestly, none of them really worked — it’s one of those places where you just have to stand there for a minute.

After breakfast (spicy potatoes and paratha at some local spot where everyone seemed to know our guide), we headed over to Agra Fort. It’s massive — red walls that go on forever, echoing footsteps in old corridors. Sameer joked that if you get lost here you might end up ruling India by accident. There was this moment standing on one of the terraces looking back toward the Taj through morning haze — I didn’t expect to feel so quiet inside.

The last stop was the Tomb of I'timad-ud-Daulah, which people call the Baby Taj. It’s smaller but covered in delicate carvings; birds darted around while we wandered through shaded gardens. By noon it was getting hot again, so we piled back into the car for Delhi with tired feet and about fifty new memories rattling around my head. Still think about that first glimpse of white marble in blue dawn sometimes.
