The Experience

"The car will be outside your hotel at three," the confirmation email had said, and that's the whole point of this tour — you're moving while most of Delhi sleeps. The driver picks you up from anywhere in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram or Faridabad, and the three-hour drive to Agra happens in the dark, which means you arrive as the sun starts to turn the marble pink. A guide meets you at the gates with entry tickets already in hand, and you get ninety minutes inside the Taj Mahal itself, which is long enough to walk the grounds, stand in front of it, sit with it for a moment, and not feel rushed.

After the Taj Mahal, the guide takes you to Agra Fort — the red sandstone walls and the courtyards where Shah Jahan once ruled, and later was imprisoned by his own son. You spend about an hour there, moving through the structure at a pace that lets the scale of it sink in. The fort sits on the Yamuna River, and the architecture tells you something about the Mughal Empire that no photograph quite captures.
