The Experience

The first thing that hit me was the color—Mumbai isn’t shy about it. We rolled through South Mumbai in an air-conditioned car (thank god for that), and the city just spilled out on both sides. Our guide, Sameer, pointed out the Ferozeshah Mehta Gardens—locals call them the Hanging Gardens, which I only half-understood until we walked up and saw how they perch above the chaos. The grass felt springy under my shoes, and there was this faint smell of wet earth mixed with something floral—jasmine maybe? It was quieter up there than I’d expected, just some kids chasing each other and a couple of old men reading newspapers.

We wound down toward Banganga Tank next, which honestly I’d never heard of before this day trip in Mumbai. Sameer told us families have been coming here for centuries to pray or just breathe. There were women in bright saris lighting little oil lamps by the water, and I tried not to stare but it was hard not to. The air smelled smoky-sweet from incense, and every so often you’d hear someone chanting softly. I fumbled trying to pronounce “Banganga” right—Sameer laughed and said I wasn’t the first foreigner to mess it up.

Chowpatty Beach came last—just as the sun started to dip behind towers and fishing boats. It wasn’t quiet at all; kids yelling, vendors frying snacks (the bhel puri is salty-sour and sticks to your fingers), couples walking barefoot along the sand. There was something comforting about it—the messiness, the noise, everyone just being themselves. I still think about that view over Marine Drive with all those lights flickering on as dusk settled in. That’s what stuck with me most—not one big moment but all these little ones stitched together.
