The experience

The flower market opens the tour while the vendors are still arranging their garlands: saffron-colored marigolds and red roses stacked in the half-light. From there you move to Iskcon Temple in Girgaon to experience the spiritual side of the city before the day fills up. An English-speaking guide walks you through each stop, explaining what you're standing in front of and why it matters to Mumbai.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (the Victoria Terminus Railway Station now called CST) handles 660,000 footfalls daily, making it the busiest station in India. In the early morning, before the crowds arrive, it also serves as the city's largest newspaper sorting area, a function most visitors never see. You'll stand in the station and watch this happen. Marine Drive follows, quiet and clear at dawn, before the traffic and heat take over.

The final stop is Sassoon Dock, where the Koli fisherfolk, the original inhabitants of Mumbai, bring in around 60 tonnes of fish each morning. You'll see the boats in their different colors, watch the grading and sorting, and learn about the Bombay Duck, a fish species found nowhere else. Private transportation moves you between stops.
