The experience

The tour opens at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, the Gothic Revival station modeled on London's St Pancras and still called VT by the 2.5 million commuters who pass through it daily. From there you move through South Mumbai's landmarks: Marine Drive's three-kilometer coastal boulevard, the Gateway of India with its yellow basalt arches built to commemorate a royal visit, and Mani Bhavan, Mahatma Gandhi's old residence, which now holds a reference library, photo exhibition and the spinning wheel he used. A ferry ride departs from Apollo Bunder in Colaba, cruising the coastline before the route turns inland.

The Dabbawala segment (included in the private tour with Dabbawala option) takes you to Churchgate station to watch the lunch box delivery men at work, followed by a train ride to see the system in motion. These barefoot couriers collect freshly made food from homes across the city and deliver it to office workers using a low-tech but precise network built on teamwork and timing. At Dhobi Ghat, nearly two hundred dhobis and their families work in concrete wash pens fitted with flogging stones, soaking clothes in sudsy water, thrashing them clean, boiling them in starch and hanging them to dry before pressing and bundling them for delivery. A hereditary occupation that has defined Mumbai's laundry service for generations.

The walk through Dharavi, Asia's largest slum, lasts one to one and a half hours and covers both residential and commercial areas. An air-conditioned vehicle moves you between stops. A budget Indian meal is provided during the day. The full tour runs seven to ten hours with your English-speaking guide. Wheelchair-accessible transport and facilities are available on the designated option, and public transportation is nearby if you need an alternative.
