The Experience

The first thing that hit me was the swirl of color at Phool Gully — not just flowers, but marigold garlands everywhere, people haggling in Hindi and English, that faint wet-earth smell after someone splashed water on the pavement. There was pride in how he talked about Dharavi’s businesses — leather shops, pottery studios, everything packed together but somehow organized in its own way. Honestly, I felt awkward at first walking those alleys as an outsider, but people mostly smiled or ignored us.

I still think about that day sometimes — especially the moment when we paused in a sunlit courtyard and everything went quiet except for distant music somewhere above us. Mumbai is chaos and kindness mixed together; you feel it most when you’re just standing still for a second.
