The experience

The tour starts at Gateway of India and moves through Mumbai using the same transport locals do: the crowded Mumbai local train, BEST buses and black-and-yellow taxis. You'll pass Regal Circle, the Prince of Wales Museum, Kala Ghoda and Bombay University, then reach the High Court, Oval Maidan and Churchgate. The stops are chosen to show the city's architecture and rhythm, not just its postcard views. Entry to Mani Bhavan is included, as are snacks and all public transport fares during the tour.

Dhobi Ghat (an open-air laundromat where clothes are beaten clean against stone steps) sits in the middle of the tour. It's a working site, not a museum, and the guide will explain how the system has operated for over a century. Marine Drive and Chowpatty close out the day, and you'll have time to check out local food if you want it. The whole route takes four hours.

The guides are students trained by a nonprofit that works in youth empowerment and learning. They speak English, know the places well and can answer questions about the neighborhoods you move through. The arrangement means your tour fee supports their education and employment.
