The Experience

There’s this sound I still hear — the cawing of crows above Crawford Market, mixed with the shouts of vendors and the clatter of carts. Our guide, Sanjay, waved us through a tangle of fruit stalls and pointed out a pile of bright marigolds. He knew everyone — or at least it felt that way. One woman handed me a slice of guava sprinkled with salt and chili; I tried not to wince at the kick but she just grinned. I guess that’s Bombay for you: always a little more than you expect.

The private car was a relief after that chaos — honestly, I didn’t realize how much I’d appreciate air conditioning until we hit Marine Drive. Sanjay told stories about the old art deco buildings as we cruised along the sea wall. At Chowpatty Beach, he let us hop out for photos (and to watch kids chasing stray dogs). The city smells different here — salty and sweet at the same time, with a hint of fried snacks drifting over from somewhere. We passed the High Court (gothic arches sharper than I imagined) and then stopped at Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum. Quiet inside; sandalwood in the air. It made me slow down for a minute.

I didn’t expect Dhobi Ghat to be so massive — rows and rows of laundry flapping like flags. Sanjay explained how whole families work there, passing buckets hand-to-hand. He laughed when I tried to say “dhobi” properly (I definitely butchered it). Later in Kamala Nehru Park, we watched schoolkids pile into the giant shoe sculpture. The Hanging Gardens next door were full of old men playing cards under banyan trees — one waved us over but we kept moving because time was tight.

By the time we reached Gateway of India, my shirt stuck to my back but I was too busy staring up at those arches to care. Sanjay offered to take our photo (“stand here — best light!”), and yeah… he was right. It’s funny how you can see so much in just half a day if someone else handles all the details — tickets, parking, traffic headaches (which are real here). Even now, thinking back on it all, it feels like Mumbai is still buzzing around me somehow.
