The experience

What does a day in Mumbai actually look like when you skip the guidebook version? This tour threads through the city's financial heart and its working neighborhoods in a single arc. You start at the Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum, where you'll stand in the rooms where Mahatma Gandhi lived and planned India's independence movement, then move to the Gateway of India: the colonial landmark that overlooks the Arabian Sea. From there the route takes you to Dhobi Ghat, one of the world's largest open-air laundries, where you'll watch rows of concrete wash pens where traditional washermen still handwash clothes by hand, a sight that has barely changed in a century.

The tour includes a walk through Dharavi, one of Asia's largest slums and the filming location for "Slumdog Millionaire." Your guide provides context about the neighborhood's history and residents during the roughly two-hour walk, and points out actual filming locations from the movie. Dharavi is also the heart of Mumbai's small-scale industries (leather tanning, pottery, recycling), so you're seeing how a significant portion of the city actually works, not just its monuments. The route then moves through Colaba Causeway, a bustling street market in South Mumbai packed with clothing, antiques and street food, and past Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, the architectural centerpiece of the city's railway system. You'll also see Marine Drive, which locals call the "Queen's Necklace" for the way its lights reflect off the Arabian Sea in the evening, and pass through Kala Ghoda, the arts district, and Hanging Gardens, a quiet green space that breaks up the urban density.

Your guide speaks English throughout, and the vehicle is air-conditioned. Pickup happens from your hotel, airport or cruise terminal, and fuel, tolls and parking are all covered. Entry to the Gandhi Museum is included. Meals are not. The seven-hour span gives you time to move between neighborhoods without rushing, though you can adjust the pace and which stops matter most to you.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 11 years). Children under 5 can't be included in the booking.

What exactly is Dhobi Ghat and why is it worth seeing?

Dhobi Ghat is one of the largest and oldest open-air laundries in the world, located in central Mumbai. Rows of concrete wash pens line the site where traditional washermen, called dhobis, handwash clothes using methods that have remained largely unchanged for generations. It's a working neighborhood, not a museum, so you're watching an active trade that still serves much of the city.

How long is the walk through Dharavi, and what will I actually see there?

The Dharavi walk lasts about two hours. Your guide will show you filming locations from "Slumdog Millionaire" and explain the neighborhood's history and how residents live and work. Dharavi is the center of Mumbai's small-scale industries, including leather tanning, pottery and recycling operations, so you'll see how these trades function on a daily basis.

Does the tour include meals, and are there places to eat along the way?

Meals are not included in the tour price. However, Colaba Causeway, which is part of the route, is famous for its diverse eateries and street food vendors, so you'll have the option to stop and eat if you want to. Your guide can recommend places based on your preferences.

What's included in the price, and what do I need to arrange separately?

The tour includes pickup and drop-off from your hotel, airport or cruise terminal; an English-speaking guide; an air-conditioned vehicle; fuel, tolls and parking; entry to the Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum; and a water bottle. Meals, alcoholic drinks and gratuities are not included.

Can I choose just the Dharavi slum tour instead of the full city tour?

Yes. A three-hour private slum tour of Dharavi alone is available as a separate option at checkout. The full private city and slum tour combines both the city landmarks and the Dharavi walk into a seven-hour experience.
