The experience

You start from your hotel in South Mumbai, picked up in an air-conditioned car with your guide. The first day moves through the city's colonial heart: Gateway of India, the Victorian-Gothic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Dhobi Ghat's open-air laundry where hundreds of workers wash clothes by hand, and Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum, where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during his time in Mumbai. You'll see Marine Drive's curved promenade, Hanging Gardens with views across the Arabian Sea, and the Bombay High Court's red sandstone facade. The guide provides commentary on each stop, explaining the history and architecture as you move through the neighborhoods.

A ferry ride from Gateway of India takes you to Elephanta Island, where you explore the Elephanta Caves: a UNESCO World Heritage site with rock-cut sculptures dating to the 5th–7th centuries. The main chamber holds the Trimurti, a three-faced sculpture of Lord Shiva, surrounded by panels depicting Hindu mythology.
