The Experience

“You’ll want to hold on tight when the ferry rocks,” our guide Ravi grinned as we squeezed onto the benches at the Gateway of India. I wasn’t expecting the sea breeze to smell so sharp—like salt and something faintly sweet from the chai stalls nearby. The skyline of Mumbai faded behind us as we drifted toward Elephanta Island. I kept looking back at the city, half-awake in the morning haze, while Ravi pointed out little details about the passing boats that I’d never have noticed on my own.

The climb up to Elephanta Caves was steeper than I thought (I stopped for water twice—don’t judge). Inside, it was cool and echoey; you could almost hear your own thoughts bounce off those ancient stone walls. Ravi told us stories about gods carved into the rock—he made Shiva sound less like a legend and more like someone you might bump into at a market. There was this moment where sunlight hit a statue’s face just right and everything went quiet except for a bird somewhere outside. I still think about that view sometimes.

The day felt long but somehow not enough; there’s always another corner or flavor to chase here.
