The experience
Kanheri Caves sit in the forests of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, on the western edge of Mumbai, and contain Buddhist sculptures, relief carvings, paintings and inscriptions spanning nearly a thousand years. The site is accessed by rock-cut steps up a hillside, and the cave complex comprises 109 chambers carved from basalt rock. By the 3rd century CE, Kanheri had become an important Buddhist settlement on the Konkan coast. The name itself comes from the Sanskrit Krishnagiri, meaning black mountain.
After the caves, the tour moves to the Global Vipassana Pagoda near Gorai, northwest of Mumbai. Built on a peninsula between Gorai creek and the Arabian Sea, the pagoda was inaugurated in 2009 as a monument to peace and harmony. Inside is the world's largest stone dome constructed without any supporting pillars. You'll spend 10 minutes in meditation, watch a video presentation on Buddhism and the pagoda's history, and walk through a picture gallery. The setting itself (water on two sides, open sky) frames the meditation experience.
The tour runs 8 to 10 hours and includes pickup and drop-off from your Mumbai location, private transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle, bottled water, entry to both sites, toll and parking fees, and a local English-speaking guide. You'll need to bring a cap or hat and trekking or sport shoes. The caves close on Mondays. Choose between a 6-seater or 4-seater vehicle depending on your group size.
