Small groups.★ 4.88 (171)3hUS$ 20View ›The morning started with us getting a bit lost in the parking lot outside Sanjay Gandhi National Park—our driver, Sameer, waved from behind a crowd of school kids on a field trip. It was already humid, that sticky Mumbai kind, but inside the park everything changed. The air felt cooler, smelled like wet leaves and incense from somewhere I couldn’t see. Sameer kept laughing about how even locals get turned around here. Our guide Priya handed out bottled water and pointed at monkeys squabbling near the gate—she said they steal snacks if you’re not careful.
I’d read about the Kanheri Caves before but seeing them carved right into the black basalt rock was something else. Priya showed us faded Buddhist carvings—she traced her finger over one lotus flower and told us it was almost 2,000 years old. It’s strange how quiet it gets inside those caves, even with other visitors around. You hear your own footsteps echoing. Outside again, we watched a peacock fan its feathers for about five seconds before it bolted (honestly, I thought they’d be less shy).
The tiger safari was next. We piled into this bus with metal grills on the windows—felt slightly ridiculous but also safe enough to laugh about it. We did spot two lions lounging under some trees and then a Bengal tiger pacing along the fence line, which made everyone go silent for a minute. There’s something heavy about seeing those animals up close—even knowing it’s a protected area inside SGNP. After that, we stopped at the Jain temple tucked away in all that green; white marble floors cool under bare feet, and little bells tinkling as people walked past. I tried to pronounce “Aadinath” correctly—Priya smiled politely but I probably didn’t get it right.
By late afternoon we were back in traffic heading home, my shoes still dusty from climbing around Kanheri Caves. I keep thinking about that sudden hush when we saw the tiger—just for a second everything else dropped away.
