The Experience
Is it normal for a city to feel like it’s vibrating under your feet? That’s what hit me as soon as we rolled down Marine Drive—our driver weaving past yellow-black cabs, the sea air already sticky. Our guide, Ajay, greeted us at the hotel with this easy smile and a bottle of water (which I clung to all day). First stop: the Gateway of India. There were pigeons everywhere and a wedding photo shoot happening right in front of the arch—Ajay said that’s just Mumbai mornings. The ferry to Elephanta Island was louder than I expected; families chattering in Marathi, oily snacks being passed around. I tried one—something spicy wrapped in newspaper—and watched the city shrink behind us.
The Elephanta Caves are older than most countries (Ajay kept reminding us), but honestly, it was the cool dampness inside that hit first after the sun outside. The Trimurti sculpture is huge—three faces of Shiva staring out from stone. I tried to imagine carving that by hand, centuries ago, but mostly I just listened to Ajay explain why people still come here to pray. On the way back, we took this toy train up the hill—I’m not sure if it’s meant for kids or tired adults like me, but either way, my legs thanked me.
Back in Mumbai proper, we stopped at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus—the station looks like a palace gone wild with detail. Then Copper Chimney for lunch: buffet style, lots of curries and things I couldn’t name (the dal was smoky and comforting). There was this moment in Crawford Market where a vendor handed me a slice of guava dusted with chili salt—my mouth burned and cooled at once. It felt like everyone had somewhere urgent to be except us. Later at Dhobi Ghat, rows and rows of laundry flapped above men pounding shirts against stone; Ajay joked that if you lose your socks here they’re probably halfway across town by now.
I didn’t expect Mani Bhavan (Gandhi’s old house) to be so quiet compared to everything else—a hush you could almost hear over the traffic outside. The Hanging Gardens were breezy and full of kids running around; someone offered me coconut water straight from the shell. By late afternoon on Marine Drive again, sunlight bouncing off every car hood, I realized how much Mumbai fits together by not fitting at all. Still thinking about that first taste of guava and how Ajay laughed when I tried to say “thank you” in Hindi—probably butchered it.
