The Experience
“You have to listen for the temple’s heartbeat,” our guide Sameer said as we stepped off the ferry onto Elephanta Island. I didn’t really get it at first — I was still thinking about the way the morning air in Mumbai smells like cardamom and exhaust. But then we walked into the cool shadow of the caves, and suddenly everything felt quieter, even though there were other visitors around. The carvings are so detailed you can almost feel the chisel marks under your fingers. Sameer pointed out Shiva’s three faces — I tried to remember their names but honestly, I just stared. It’s hard not to.
The ferry ride itself from the Gateway of India is a whole thing — seagulls swooping overhead, kids selling chai on the dock, that salty wind that sticks to your skin. Back in the city, we zigzagged through traffic (how do drivers here not lose their minds?) and stopped at places like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Marine Drive. At Dhobi Ghat, I watched a man slap a shirt against stone so hard it sounded like applause. There was this moment at Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum where an old woman smiled at me as she spun a tiny charkha; I didn’t expect that to hit me but it did.
Lunch was nothing fancy — street food near Colaba Causeway — but those hot samosas tasted perfect after all that walking. Sameer joked that if you survive crossing a Mumbai street you can handle anything in life. He might be right. The Hanging Gardens were our last stop; by then my feet hurt but I didn’t care much because watching the sun dip over Marine Drive made everything slow down for a second. I still think about that view sometimes when my own city feels too loud.
