The Experience

“You have to see Mumbai from the tracks,” our guide Ramesh said, half-smiling as he handed us our local train tickets. I didn’t expect to start the day this way—squeezed between commuters, the air thick with cardamom and someone’s lunchbox leaking something spicy—but it felt real. The city’s heartbeat is loudest on those trains, honestly. We rattled past Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, its Gothic arches flashing by in the morning haze. At one point I caught an old woman’s eye; she grinned and just nodded at me like we were both in on some big secret.

We jumped off near Dhobi Ghat—if “jumped” is the word for how awkwardly I scrambled out—and wandered among rows of laundry snapping in the sun. The sound of water slapping stone was everywhere. Ramesh explained how families have worked here for generations; he knew a few names and waved to a man balancing a pile of shirts taller than me. There was this sharp smell—soap, iron maybe?—and I remember thinking how much work goes into what looks so simple from above.

Later we walked through Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum (I tried to whisper but my shoes squeaked on the floorboards), then drifted up to Hanging Gardens where kids were chasing crows under banyan trees. The breeze smelled faintly sweet—flowers or maybe just relief after so much city heat.
