The Experience

Right after sunset, the city’s heat softens and the air smells faintly of sea and street food. Our driver picked us up straight from our hotel—no waiting around—and we headed out into the pulse of Mumbai at night. The first stop was the Gateway of India. It’s quieter in the evenings, just a few families taking photos and couples sharing ice cream cones from a nearby cart. Our guide shared stories about King George V’s visit—honestly, I’d never realized how much history was packed into that archway until then.

We cruised past Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus next. The building glows under yellow lights at night, looking almost like a movie set. You can hear trains rumbling in the distance and see commuters still hurrying home. We hopped out for a quick look—our guide pointed out some carvings I’d have missed on my own. From there, we drove along Marine Drive. Locals call it the Queen’s Necklace because of how the streetlights curve along the bay. There were groups sitting on the sea wall, chatting or just watching waves slap against the rocks.

We made a quick stop at Kamala Nehru Park up on Malabar Hill. The breeze up there is something else—cooler than down by the water—and you get this wide view over Mumbai’s skyline and all those twinkling lights along Marine Drive. Kids were still playing near that old boot-shaped house; it brought back memories of school trips for me.

Driving through Churchgate and Kala Ghoda felt different at night—cafés with indie music spilling out onto sidewalks, artists packing up their stalls, and that faint scent of roasting corn from a vendor near Hutatma Chowk. We passed by Bombay High Court and caught a glimpse of Rajabai Clock Tower lit up against the sky; our guide explained its mix of Gothic and Indian styles (I snapped way too many photos). We even peeked inside David Sassoon Library—quiet except for one student reading under an old lamp.

The last stops were NGMA and CSMVS museum buildings—both closed by then but beautifully illuminated from outside. And right across from Gateway of India stands The Taj Mahal Tower, its windows glowing gold above Colaba’s late-night buzz. By the time we got dropped off back at our hotel, I felt like I’d seen a whole new side to Mumbai—one you only catch when most folks are winding down for the day.
