The Experience

The morning kicked off with our guide waiting right outside the hotel lobby—big smile, holding a little sign with my name. The drive through Mumbai’s early traffic was a blur of honking rickshaws and chai stalls just opening up. We reached the shooting studio tucked away behind a faded blue gate. Inside, it was cooler than I expected; that faint smell of paint and old wood from the sets hung in the air. Next up was the mini Bollywood museum—lots of old film posters and costumes that looked like they’d seen better days but still had that sparkle. Then came my favorite part: stepping into an air-conditioned dance hall where professional dancers put on three high-energy Bollywood numbers. The music thumped so hard you could feel it in your chest. They even pulled some of us up on stage for a few moves—I’m no dancer but it was impossible not to grin like an idiot. Later, we tried our hand at dubbing in a small studio booth; I sang terribly off-key but left with a recording as proof.

After lunch (simple thali at a local spot—spicy dal, fresh roti), we drove along Bandstand Promenade where big crowds gather hoping for glimpses of film stars. Our driver pointed out Shah Rukh Khan’s house (“Mannat”)—there were fans camped outside with homemade banners—and Salman Khan’s place too. It felt surreal seeing these famous addresses after years of watching their movies.

Dharavi was next—a world apart from the glitz earlier. As soon as we stepped into those narrow alleys, everything changed: smells of soap and leather mixed with frying snacks; kids darted past carrying stacks of plastic bottles for recycling; women sat embroidering bright fabrics right outside their doors. Our local guide grew up here—he showed us tiny workshops making pottery, soap, even wallets from scraps. What stuck with me most wasn’t poverty—it was how busy everyone seemed, how much pride people took in their work. There’s this sense of community you can’t really describe until you walk those lanes yourself.
