The Experience

The moment you walk onto a Bollywood studio set in Mumbai, you hear it before you see it clearly — voices calling cues, music playing at half volume, the shuffle of crew moving equipment. After the studio floor, you move through a small Bollywood museum that traces how Indian cinema became what it is, then head into a private screening room inside the film city itself. Then the live dance performance starts, and this is where the tour shifts from watching to doing. Dancers perform a Bollywood routine specially choreographed for your group, and then they teach you the moves. You can join in or stay back; either way, you'll understand why Bollywood dance is its own language.

The last stop is the sound recording studio, where you get to record a song with your own voice — your choice of track, your voice, a real recording that gets mailed to you after the tour ends. Before you leave, the guide shows you the sets they keep standing: an artificial hospital, offices, a jail, a police station, a courtroom. These are the backdrops for hundreds of scenes, and seeing them empty and lit from above, you realize how much of what you watch on screen is built right here in Mumbai. The whole day moves through the studio with your guide; air-conditioned transport picks you up and brings you back.
