The experience
Karnak Temple sprawls across two hundred acres on Luxor's east bank, built over centuries as a centre of worship for the god Amun-Re. The complex holds multiple temples (dedicated to Ptah, Khonsu, Aten and the goddess Mut) each surrounded by thick mud brick walls with eight gates. Your guide walks you through the structures and explains the layers of history carved into the stone. The scale and detail are what make Karnak different from any single temple: it is a city of worship, and seeing it with someone who can read the inscriptions changes what you notice.
On the west bank, the Temple of Hatshepsut rises in three tiers of coloured stone statues and carved reliefs. The temple records Queen Hatshepsut's naval missions to the land of Punt, where traders brought back incense and myrrh for the gods. From there, you move into the Valley of the Kings: a series of narrow rock-cut corridors and chambers where pharaohs were buried. The tombs included in your ticket give you access to three burial chambers. Additional tombs of Tutankhamun, Ramses V, Ramses VI and Seti I are available at extra cost. The Colossi of Memnon, two massive stone statues on the plain, close the day. Lunch at a local restaurant and water throughout keep you fuelled. An optional visit to a stone carving or papyrus workshop is available if you want to see how artisans work today.
Hotel pickup from Hurghada is included, and the drive to Luxor takes you across the desert. Your guide is one person for the whole day, not a group leader rotating between stops. The itinerary moves at your pace. If you want longer at one site, the guide adjusts. Languages available are English, Spanish, Italian, French and five others, so you can book in the language you speak.
