The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel in Hurghada. You travel by air-conditioned car to Luxor, where your guide leads you first to Karnak Temple on the east bank of the Nile: the largest place of worship ever built, with its famous Hypostyle Hall, a forest of giant pillars constructed over two thousand years by generation after generation of pharaohs. After lunch at a local restaurant in Luxor, you cross to the west bank to see the Colossi of Memnon, two massive statues rising about 18 meters from the plain, the remains of what was once the largest temple complex on the west bank.

The Valley of the Kings is where the day's main focus lands. Once called the great Place of the Truth, this isolated valley behind Deir el Bahri holds the tombs of Egypt's most powerful kings. You visit three of them: tombs carved deep into the desert rock, richly decorated and filled with treasures meant for the pharaohs' afterlife. The valley is dominated by a pyramid-shaped mountain peak, and the scale of what lies beneath the surface becomes clear only when you stand inside.

Hatshepsut Temple, the only female pharaoh's monument, rises out of the desert plain in a series of terraces that merge with the limestone cliffs of the Theban Mountain as if nature itself had built it. After the temples and tombs, you have free time in Luxor for shopping at papyrus institutes before the drive back to Hurghada. Your guide speaks English, French, German, or Arabic, and children from age 2 are welcome when accompanied by an adult.
