The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Hurghada hotel and a four-hour drive south to Luxor. Once there, your guide takes you first to Karnak Temple, the largest religious complex ever built in Egypt and dedicated to the god Amon, his wife Mut and their son Khonsu. The scale alone (a sprawl of pylons, courtyards and sanctuaries) makes clear why it dominated Egyptian worship for centuries. From Karnak, you move to the Colossi of Memnon, two massive seated statues that are all that remain of the mortuary temple of Amenhotep III.

The heart of the day is Valley of the Kings, where pharaohs cut and decorated their tombs deep into the rock with religious writings and scenes. Your guide explains what you're seeing in the painted chambers. The journey the dead king takes through the underworld, the spells meant to protect him. After Valley of the Kings, you visit Temple of Hatshepsut, the mortuary temple of the only woman pharaoh to rule Egypt, built around 1490 B.C. and known locally as El Dir El Bahari. The temple rises in terraces against the cliff face, a design unlike anything else in Luxor.

Lunch happens at a local restaurant in Luxor, with options to fit dietary needs and restrictions. Your guide helps with photographs at each site and answers questions throughout. The return drive to Hurghada takes another four hours, with dropoff at your hotel in the evening.
