The Experience

I’ll never forget how quiet it was when we left Hurghada before sunrise—just that soft shuffle of our driver loading snacks into the car. The road to Luxor is long (about three and a half hours), but I actually liked watching the desert change color as we went. Our guide, Ahmed, met us right outside the city. He had this easy way of explaining things—he’d point out a crumbling wall or a palm grove and tell some story about ancient pharaohs or local kids playing football nearby. I tried to pronounce “Hatshepsut” correctly at one point; Ahmed grinned and said I was close enough.

The Valley of the Kings felt different than I expected—not spooky, just… hushed. The air smelled dusty but sweet, like old stone warmed by sun. Inside one of the tombs, you could see paint still clinging to the walls after thousands of years. Ahmed showed us tiny details in the murals that I would’ve missed on my own—a bird here, a faded symbol there. We stopped for photos at the Colossi of Memnon; honestly, they’re even bigger than they look in pictures (and hotter—I remember my shirt sticking to my back). Lunch was in this small restaurant with fans humming overhead and plates of grilled chicken and rice coming out fast. There was this tangy salad I’m still thinking about.

Karnak Temple was our last big stop—134 columns towering above us, sunlight slanting through in stripes. It’s hard to take it all in at once; I kept losing track of where we were because everything felt so enormous. If you have time, you can squeeze in Luxor Museum too (we skipped it since we were pretty wiped). On the drive back to Hurghada, everyone sort of drifted off or stared out at the fields rolling by. I caught myself replaying little moments—the silence inside a tomb, Ahmed’s laugh when he caught me squinting at hieroglyphs—and thinking how strange it is that all this history is just… there.
