The experience

Luxor is Egypt's open-air museum, and this tour packs four major temples and the royal burial grounds into one long day. You leave Hurghada early and arrive in Luxor after a 3.5-hour drive, then head straight to the Valley of the Kings on the west bank. Your guide escorts you through three tombs (some of the most intact burial chambers in Egypt), and you can pay an extra charge to enter Tutankhamen's Tomb if you want. After the valley, you stop at an Alabaster Factory to watch artisans carve sculptures and vases, with time to browse if you choose.

From there the route moves to Hatshepsut Temple, the mortuary shrine of the female pharaoh, and the Colossi of Memnon, two massive stone statues that once guarded a temple now lost to the Nile. Lunch happens at a restaurant overlooking the river, giving you a break before the afternoon leg. You then cross to Karnak Temple, the largest temple complex in the world. The bus ride takes about 40 minutes, or you can pay a small extra charge to travel by motorboat instead, a route that passes Banana Island and lets you see the Nile from the water. The day ends with free time before the drive back to Hurghada.
