The experience

Driving out of Hurghada before dawn, the minivan heads west toward Luxor: about three hours across the desert, and the guide starts talking as soon as you leave the hotel. This is not a quiet ride. Your Egyptologist knows the tombs, the dynasties, the reasons why certain pharaohs chose certain valleys, and by the time you arrive at the Valley of the Kings, you already have context for what you are about to see. After the Valley, you stop at the Temple of Hatshepsut: the terraced structure carved into the cliff face, built by Egypt's only female pharaoh around 1490 BC.
