The experience

The day starts with hotel pickup and a drive to the Valley of the Kings on Luxor's West Bank, where you enter the Necropolis of Thebes. Your Egyptologist guide takes you through four royal tombs: the Tomb of Ramses, the Tomb of Horemheb, the Tomb of Merenptah, and the Tomb of King Tutankhamen, discovered nearly intact in 1922 by Howard Carter. You stand inside the burial chambers and see the royal mummy of the young king. The golden mask itself is in Cairo, but the tomb's painted walls and the scale of the underground complex make the discovery real in a way a museum case cannot.

After the tombs, you're driven to the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari, the mortuary temple of Egypt's only female pharaoh, who ruled as a king and was an ancestor of Tutankhamen. The temple rises from the desert floor in three terraces, its columns and reliefs still vivid. Next is a short stop at the Colossi of Memnon, the two largest ancient statues in Egypt, dating to the reign of King Amenhotep III. Between sites, the air-conditioned vehicle gives you a break from the sun.

Lunch, Egyptian traditional Koshari, happens midday, then you cross to the East Bank and Karnak Temple, a complex of temples built across multiple reigns. You walk the Avenue of Sphinxes, enter the Hypostyle Hall with its 134 gigantic columns, and see the obelisks of Queen Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis I, the Temple of Amon with its lotus and papyrus carvings, and the Sacred Lake. The scale and detail of Karnak (built and rebuilt over centuries) make it one of the world's greatest architectural sites.
