The Experience

We’d barely stepped out of the car in Luxor when our guide, Ahmed, grinned and handed me a tiny cup of sweet mint tea—he said it was “for courage” before the Valley of the Kings. I laughed but honestly, my hands were already sweating. The air smelled like dust and something warm—maybe bread from a nearby stall. Ahmed knew everyone; even the ticket guy waved us through with a joke I didn’t catch. Inside those tombs, it’s so quiet you can hear your own breath bounce off painted walls. I tried to remember all the pharaoh names but got lost in the colors instead.

The Temple of Hatshepsut looked almost unreal against that pale cliff. Ahmed told us she was one of Egypt’s few female pharaohs—he seemed genuinely proud. There was this moment where sunlight hit the columns just right and everything glowed gold for a second. I wandered off for a bit, just listening to birds and some distant hammering (restoration work maybe?). After that we crossed to Karnak temple—honestly, it’s so massive you feel tiny walking between those pillars. By then my legs were tired but I didn’t want to leave yet.

Our last stop was Luxor Temple right as evening started to settle—the city noise drifting in from outside mixed with this soft orange light on ancient stones. Some kids were playing nearby and an old man nodded at me as we passed. It felt strange and good at once—like history wasn’t finished here yet.
