The Experience

"You want to see where the pharaohs actually slept?" That’s what our guide, Ahmed, asked as we climbed into the van just after sunrise in Luxor. The city was still waking up—someone was sweeping dust from a shopfront, and I could smell fresh bread somewhere close by. We headed straight for the West Bank and I realized I had no idea how massive the Valley of the Kings would feel until I stood there. It’s quiet in a way that makes you whisper without meaning to. Ahmed pointed out carvings on Ramses III’s tomb—tiny blue paint still clinging to the walls after thousands of years. I tried to imagine being buried here with all that color around you. Didn’t expect to feel so small.

The air got warmer as we moved on to Hatshepsut’s Temple. There’s something about those columns against the cliffs—almost like they’re holding up the sky. We stopped at the Colossi of Memnon too; honestly, they look like they’re just waiting for someone to ask them a question (I didn’t). Lunch happened somewhere between temples—I can’t remember exactly where because I was still thinking about those painted ceilings in Merneptah’s tomb. We joked with Ahmed about how he could probably walk these sites blindfolded by now. He laughed and said his feet know every stone.

Day two was all about the East Bank—Karnak first, which is just… huge. The Hypostyle Hall is packed with columns so tall you have to lean back until your neck aches just to see the tops. There were kids playing near the Avenue of Sphinxes, their laughter echoing off ancient stone (that sound sticks with me). At Luxor Temple, late afternoon sun made everything glow gold for a few minutes—it felt like time paused right then. The museum visit surprised me; seeing Tutankhamun’s things up close made it all more real somehow, not just pictures in a book.

I’m still not sure if it was the history or just Ahmed’s stories that made it all stick—but even days later, I keep thinking about that hush inside Ramses’ tomb and how Luxor smells like dust and sunlight in spring.
