The experience

Your hotel pickup starts the day, and a private air-conditioned van carries you across the Nile to the West Bank, where ancient Egyptians built their tombs and mortuary temples. The Valley of the Kings opens first. You'll enter three royal tombs cut deep into limestone, each following the same pattern: three corridors leading down to an antechamber and a sunken sarcophagus chamber where pharaohs were buried. The guide walks you through the layout and the beliefs that shaped them.

Next is the Temple of Hatshepsut, a mortuary temple built for the female pharaoh and dedicated to Amun. It sits beside the Temple of Mentuhotep II, which inspired its design and later served as a quarry for its stones: a detail that shows how ancient builders reused what came before. From there you move to the Colossi of Memnon, twin seated statues of Amenhotep III carved from stone, their gaze fixed eastward toward the river. Lunch follows at a local restaurant before you cross back to the East Bank.

The afternoon brings Karnak Temple, a sprawling complex of three main temples, smaller enclosed shrines, and outer temples spread across three kilometers north of Luxor. Then comes Luxor Temple itself, built from Nubian sandstone quarried in southwestern Egypt: the same stone used for monuments across Upper Egypt and in restoration work today. Your guide explains the construction and the religious purpose of each space before the van returns you to your hotel.
